The following is a pleasant walk through the south side of Swakopmund that I often take. It begins at the Aquarium, takes you into the town-centre and ends at the Mole. The time it will take depends on your particular interests and especially your photography time. I would budget about 3 to 4 hours for the tour. I have indicated the average time for visit to some of the places of interest.

The Aquarium - Strand Street South. The Aquarium focuses on the variety of fish and marine life found along the Namibia coastline. An underwater walk-way allows visitors to view the fish, including Shark, at close range. (Time budget 45 min)

Open: Tues-Sun from10h00 to 16h00    Closed Mondays

Hansa Brauerie - Anton Lubowski Ave. Founded in 1929 and once famous for its beers, all brewed in accordance with the German Reinheids-gebot of 1516. Many a Dorsland-Dry-Throat was quenched with the popular  'Hansa Pilsner", "Hansa Tafel" and other Namibian beers until the brewery's closure in September 2005.

The Kaserne - Anton Lubowski/Bismarck Str

Built in 1905 by, and to house  the engineer soldiers of the 2nd Eisenbahnbaukompagnie, who came to build the first wooden jetty, the Kaserne was used as a school and now serves as a youth hostel. ( Time Budget 15min)  Kaserne more

Haus Hohenzollern. Tobias Hainyeko St. Built 1904-06 as The Hotel Hohenzollern has long been the subject of local urban myth regarding its use as a bordello, but untrue. The facade is ornately decorated which has made this one of the most photographed buildings in Swakopmund.   (Time budget 15min)

The Old Hotel Kaiserhof - Sam Nujoma Ave.  Built in 1905 by A. Bause, a member of the Swakopmund Municipality. The hotel suffered extensive fire damage in 1914 and stood for many years. It later served as shop-space. It is now the Swakopmund branch of Bank Windhoek.

The Jetty. Strand Street South. Originally built as a wooden structure in 1904-5. It soon suffered from marine borer molluscs and the construction of an iron replacement was begun in 1912. Only 242m of the planned 640m had been completed by the outbreak of WW1 in August 1914, when construction ceased ceased. The Jetty underwent major repairs during 2005/06 and was re-opened to the public in October 2006. Jetty more

Woermann Haus - Upper Bismarck Str

Built in 1894 as offices and residential quarters for the senior officials of the Damara and Namaqua Trading Company. Extensions were made in 1903-05 and wood paneled offices were added. When Prince Albert of Prussia visited the colony in 1907 he was accommodated here.  The 'Fachwerkbau' style makes this one of the most attractive buildings in the town. Bought by the Administration in 1921 it has served as a school hostel, and now houses the Public Library and Art Gallery.

The attractive  Damara Tower was used as a navigation point for ships, and for N$10 you can climb to the top for a panoramic view of the town.
