Touring By Public Transport in Namibia is considerably better than in most African
countries. However, it should not be compared with services available in first
world countries. The map show Namibia towns that can be accessed by TransNamib
Rail services. Note that there is no direct rail service between
South Africa and Namibia and that Karasburg is the end of the line. Public transport may initially appear to be a bit limiting, but you
might want to consider using this option to travel between the major towns and
with a little advanced planning you could arrange to join one of the locally
guided tour to the specific area or point of interest that you want to visit.
Compared to European rail services
the speeds at which the Namibia narrow-gauge track trains run
are quite slow. The overnight journey,
Windhoek to Swakopmund takes about 8 hours to complete the
approx distance of 360km. On the standard Starline Service
there are no sleeper-cars or dining car. You'll be in a seat the
whole journey and you should be prepared to take your own food
and drinks with you, but with a little preparation you can get
to many of the main towns in Namibia at a reasonable price.
