The following is a pleasant walk through the south side of Swakopmund
that I often take. It begins at the Aquarium, takes you into the
town-centre and ends at the Mole. The time it will take depends on your
particular interests and especially your photography time. I would
budget about 3 to 4 hours for the tour. I have indicated the average
time for visit to some of the places of interest.

The Aquarium - Strand Street South. The Aquarium focuses on the variety
of fish and marine life found along the Namibia coastline. An
underwater walk-way allows visitors to view the fish, including
Shark, at close range. (Time budget 45 min)

Hansa Brauerie - Anton Lubowski Ave. Founded in 1929 and once famous for its beers, all brewed in accordance with the German Reinheids-gebot
of 1516. Many a Dorsland-Dry-Throat was quenched with the popular
'Hansa Pilsner", "Hansa Tafel" and other Namibian beers until
the brewery's closure in September 2005. |

The Kaserne - Anton Lubowski/Bismarck Str
Built in 1905 by, and to house the engineer soldiers of the 2nd
Eisenbahnbaukompagnie, who came to build the first wooden jetty, the
Kaserne was used as a school and now serves as a youth hostel. ( Time
Budget 15min)

Haus Hohenzollern. Tobias Hainyeko St. Built 1904-06 as The Hotel
Hohenzollern has long been the subject of local urban myth regarding its
use as a bordello, but untrue. The facade is ornately decorated which
has made this one of the most photographed buildings in Swakopmund. (Time budget 15min) |

The Old Hotel
Kaiserhof - Sam Nujoma Ave. Built in 1905 by A. Bause, a member of the
Swakopmund Municipality. The hotel suffered extensive fire damage in
1914 and stood for many years. It later served as shop-space. It is now the Swakopmund branch of Bank Windhoek. |

The
Jetty. Strand Street South.
Originally
built as a wooden structure in 1904-5. It soon suffered from marine borer molluscs and the construction of an iron replacement was begun in 1912.
Only 242m of the planned 640m had been completed by the outbreak of WW1
in August 1914,
when construction ceased ceased. The Jetty underwent major
repairs during 2005/06 and was re-opened to the public in October
2006. more

Woermann Haus - Upper
Bismarck Str
Built in 1894 as offices and residential quarters for the
senior officials of the Damara and Namaqua Trading Company. Extensions were made in 1903-05 and
wood paneled offices were added. When Prince Albert of Prussia visited
the colony in 1907 he was accommodated here. The 'Fachwerkbau'
style makes this one of the most attractive buildings in the town.
Bought by the Administration in 1921 it has served as a school
hostel, and now houses the Public Library and Art Gallery.
The
attractive
Damara Tower was used as a navigation point for
ships, and for N$10 you can climb to the top for a
panoramic view of the town.

Altes Kaiseliches
Bezirksgericht:
On the Am Zoll. Built
in 1901 as the magistrates court and later used as the district
court. From 1918 to 1990 used as the summer residence of the
Administrator General, and since Independence in 1990 as a the
summer residence for the President.

The War Memorial:
is situated on the garden area of the Am Zoll. A
remembrance service for those who fell in both World Wars,
and Namibia's War for Independence is held on the nearest Sunday to the
eleventh day of the eleventh month every year when the last post
can be heard following the period of the one-minute silence. |

The Marine
Denkmal: On Lower Daniel Tjongarero Str.
is a monument of fine detail. Donated by the Marine Infantry based at Kiel,
dedicated to Members of the First Marine Expedition who died
in the 1904/7 Herero uprising. Presented by the crew of gunboat
"Panther" on 26 July 1908. |
