Following the Battle of Waterberg on 11 August 1904 Samuel Maharero spent
his remaining years in exile until his death in 1923. His body was returned
to Okahandja where is was buried with befitting ceremony, with his
ancestors. The above complex houses the graves the Chiefs: Tjamuaha, Samuel
Maharero, Friedrich Maharero, and Kaimbire Tjamuaha.
Directions: Okahandja's main street is
called Martin Neib Ave. About 150meters south of the Post Office tower turn
east into Voigts Street. After about 50 meters you arrive at the
T-Junction with Heroes Street. Turn left. You will see the sign "Herero
Graves". It points to the sandy path that will lead you about 100m to the
Chiefs Grave.

There is a second site where other Herero Chiefs are
laid to rest.
Directions: This is at the southern end of Heroes Street on the left
hand side, next to the German Evangelical Church. Here, behind a fence are the
graves of Herero Chiefs:
- Clemens Kapuuo 06-03-1923 to 27-03-1978
- Hosea Kutako 1870 to 15-07-1970
- David Ndisiro 04-03-1925 to 25-05-1999

The Grave of Jonker Afrikaner
can be seen in a separate section of the above wired-off complex. Jonker
Afrikaner, the despotic leader of the Nama was the most powerful
mid-nineteenth century warlord in Namibia.
In one manipulative struggle to consolidate his control of the central
area of the country he slaughtered many of the Herero at Okahandja
